Old Forms / New Designs

Exhibited at Made Design as part of DesignTO 2021

This new work engages industrial and craft manufacturing processes and examines support structures to arrive at simplified design forms that exhibit their material origins. The title is a nod to the common and simple sketch forms that inspired these designs.

Camp Bench v1, 2021

Turned Cedar Log, Black Cast Concrete, Water Based Finish
72” x 16” x 8”

A large cedar log, turned smooth, rests atop black cast concrete legs. The design is inspired by the classic backwoods ‘campsite bench’ and is a nod to the earliest forms of seating. Available in several variations, including cedar, douglas fir, and maple veneer, along with options for feet made from hand carved Canadian granite, limestone, or cast concrete. During the process of selecting and turning timbers, an alternative design using a maple veneer was also explored and is available as a Version 2 below.

Camp Bench v2, 2021

Maple Veneer, Engineered Log, Hand Carved Limestone, Water Based Finish
72” x 16” x 8”

A large engineered log wrapped in maple veneer rests atop hand carved limestone legs. The design is inspired by the classic backwoods ‘campsite bench’ and is a nod to the earliest forms of seating.

Camp Stool v2, 2021

Maple Veneer on Engineered Log, Hand Carved Limestone, Water Based Finish
16” x 16” x 8”

Zig Zag Table (PC), 2021

Brake Formed Steel, Satin White Powdercoat
72” x 18” x 10”
